Alexander Okere, Benin

A trader, identified as Ms. Faith James, has been jailed by a mobile court for unlawful trading in Benin, the Edo State capital.

She was sentenced to six months imprisonment or an option of fine of N70, 000.

James was among traders arrested and arraigned under the ‘Project Clean-up Edo’ campaign of the state government for illegal trading.

It was learnt that the woman displayed her goods on a walkway against the warning issued by the state waste management agency.

She was also said to have assaulted some police officers on duty.

She was said to have been charged under Section 10 (C) of the Edo State Sanitation and Pollution Management Law No. 5, 2010 and Section 203 of the Criminal Code.

A bus driver, one Osarumense Richard, was sentenced to three months imprisonment with a N50, 000 fine for obstructing policemen in the course of their duty.

Other offenders were said to have been arraigned at mobile courts located at Oba Akenzua Cultural Centre and Edo Development Property Agency on Sakponba road.

They were said to have bagged three months imprisonment or fine options ranging from N5,000 to N20,000, depending on the offence.

The clean-up project commenced after a week-long awareness campaign at various markets in the metropolis.

A visit to some major markets revealed an increased level of compliance.

The acting General Manager of the waste management agency, Prince Aiyamenkhue Akonofua, who led the sensitisation campaign, warned that the state government would no longer condone trading on public space and indiscriminate dumping of waste.
